Q: What state was the first AKC Sanctioned Field Trial held?

Australian Walkabout

So, you think you traveled a long way to handle, help or spectate at this National? This lady most likely has won that distinction! One of the top breeders of field trial retrievers in Australia is here, along with her husband.

Julie Cramond has imported frozen semen from the US and has produced a number of Australian field champions, says Ann Heise, her American field trial friend. “Julie likes to come and watch the dogs, in order to choose bloodlines for importing frozen semen. She looks at structure and movement on the stud dogs she chooses.” Under the kennel name ‘Adderslot,’ her breedings include five Australian ‘National Retrieving Trial Champions,’ including 2013, 2014 and 2015.

One of the studs Julie has used is sire to Dogs #55 and 78 in this National. Another is a littermate to #34. And, one was owned by a gunner, Brad Clow.

“I’ve already got good bitches at home,” Julie adds. It was the challenge of getting better genetics which caused me to come over in 2002.” Watching that National, “I saw my first water quad, and it took my breath away.” She says she had three dreams at that time: (a) import a dog, (b) watch pre-National training, and (c) get a professional trainer to come to Australia for a seminar. All three were realized. In 2004, she was with Bill and Becky Beckett for six weeks. Bill has done two seminars in Australia that she organized.

RF: went out past the blind & turned to the right, got wide right  with a quick turn to the left & pounced on the bird.

LR: went thru the right side of the SR out to the holding blind hunted the cover and got it.

SR: under the arc into the pond and snatched up the bird. Great job!

HDF: stomped it!

RF: went into the mark under the arc, got deep and left of the holding blind,then made a move to the right and found his bird.

SR: went under the arc, turned to the right to retrieve the bird.

LR: straight to the fall area! Marvelous!

HDF: straight to the area and got the bird.

SR: skimmed the holding blind, drove up the hill deep of the area, quickly turned toward the area to retrieve the bird

RF: made a few loops in the area to retrieve his bird.

LR: went into the mark from the right side of the holding blind,turn toward the area jumped in the cover to retrieve the bird.

HDF: scooped it up on the fly

SR: under the arc put on an area hunt and got her bird

RF: put her nose on it

LR: jumped in the middle of the pond went under the arc of the SR, punched up the hill made two passes wide left and short of the fall then turned jumped in the cover and returned with bird in mouth. Amazing!

HDF: good mark

SR: over the mound and to the bird.

RF: got to the fall made  a loop and got the bird.

LR: skimmed past the blind on the right and over to the bird. Fantastic!

Update

* Update on # 53

Dog # 53 was in the holding blind and the handler noticed one of the dog's eyes did not look right. They took the dog out of the holding blind and straight to the vet. It was discovered the dog had a seed under the third eyelid. The seed was removed and the dog will run near the end of the test.

Conditions Report & Dog Work Update

The conditions are optimal for the running of Series 8. The visibility is perfect. The wind has picked up slightly crossing the test from left to right. The dog's seem to be scenting the birds fairly well if they can get near the area. This is proving to be a test with well placed bird, good use of concept, and a challenge of navigating thru all obstacles to reach the area. The Judges are getting the answers they need, along with some jaw dropping performances. Definitely a series to watch!

11. FC-AFC Windy City's Mighty Mouse "Mickey", LM, Charlie Hines

HDF: small area hunt to get the bird.

RF: made a few passes in the area before retrieving his bird.

SR: got a bit deep but turn quick to get his bird.

LR: got to the right of the holding blind made a pass to the right then turned left toward the area missed on the first pass then got on the second pass thru the cover for a job well done.

HDF: excellent mark

RF: put up a sizable hunt in the area before coming up with his bird.

SR: under the arc, behind the mound and to the bird.

LR: got right of the holding blind made a pass right then left to retrieve the bird.

RF:went into the mark from the left and drilled it!

SR: got into the fall circled the mound and got the bird.

LR: got just to the right of the holding blind turned and jumped into the cover and returned with the bird in mouth. Superb!

SR: Into the pond, under the arc of the bird. Very extended hunt behind the mounds before he found his bird, but stayed right in the area.

LR: Clipped right corner of the pond, right of blind and deep; Turned up to front side of blind, into the cover and the bird.

The Clear Creek Venue

The venue for the 2015 National is a 1,400-acre ranch in Corning, CA leased by Clear Creek Sports Club from the Paskenta Band of the Nomlaki Indian Tribe. Clear Creek has utilized the reservation property as its headquarters since 2003. The family run hunting operation was established in 1985.

A variety of canine field organizations has chosen the ranch as the location of their events. After the Professional Field Trainers Association moved its field trial venue here in 2008, multiple AKC clubs have followed. Numerous weekend field trials and hunt tests are held here annually. Both the 2010 and 2014 Master Nationals were located here.

“We’re excited to host the National Open and do our best to provide a good facility and environment for field trials and hunt tests,” says Brad Henman, who owns Clear Creek with his wife. “We hope to have more National events here in the future.”

“The Club is most well-known for the fast flying pheasants that make for a more challenging hunt,” notes Brad. “The Henman Family has been raising club birds for over 25 years. They raise the bird specifically for hunting clubs and have developed a strain of pheasants that are a smaller sized bird that flies harder even in tough conditions."
